Daily Lang-Tic Tasks: 180 Tasks to Enhance Language and Articulation

This year in my speech room, I want to have a quick language and/or articulation task that students complete at the beginning or end of the session. Why? This should allow me time to quickly check over homework, while simultaneously fostering independence in my students and giving them more practice with their speech/language skills. 

I realize this might need tweaking throughout the year and won't always happen, but that's ok.

Introducing Daily Lang-Tic Tasks:

The concept is simple. There are 180 pages that look like the picture below:

Red pictures frames have a language task, while blue picture frames have an articulation task. 

Display these somewhere in your room. You can print all pages and display one each day OR download and pull one on up on your iPad each day.

Language tasks include: comparing/contrasting, describing, unscrambling sentences, grammar, WH and how questions, inferences, prediction, categories, social skills, multiple meaning words, problem solving, and object functions.  

Articulation tasks require access to articulation decks. There are repeats of these tasks, only because it's difficult to come up with 180 different articulation tasks. The goal of these cards was to get more trials! There is a blank page included for your to add your own. 

I realize that for some students the task of the day might not exactly hit one of their goals/objectives. I tried to make the language tasks broad in nature and tasks that would generate language. You can have your students do the tasks out loud so you can hear them, write them down (language task), or maybe have them record themselves so you can listen later.

Five, Fast, & Fun: Open-Ended Games

I asked on my Facebook page what types of activities you wanted for the end of the school year. Many people responded with "no color ink and no laminating." Among some other responses that made me laugh! :)

So I created Five, Fast, & Fun! It includes 5 different games that all involve no color ink or laminating - which means no-fuss prep for you!

These are the games:

1. Cool Kites

2. Fancy Flowers

3. Summer Sandals

4. Beautiful Butterflies

5. Sweet Scoops

To play all games, you need a standard 6 sided die, crayons/markers, and glue. The directions are pretty simple. After the student answers a specific number of questions, he/she rolls the die and colors in the corresponding color(s) or patterns. The Cool Kites directions are shown below:

Give each student a copy of the following pages:

They color in a kite, cut it out, and glue it to the page. Easy peasy! They are great for groups - it gives the students something to do when it's not their turn. You can write words on the items for articulation/vocabulary practice at home too! Hope this helps with the end of the school year craziness!

The Silly SLP Strikes Again (Introducing Sam SLP)

I received some really kind feedback about my plurals mini-book that I decided to create another with categories! 

The mini-book uses a very similar storyline to the plurals book. In each room, Susie gets stuck to 3 items within a category for a total of 8 different categories:

Sequencing mat: 

Full page Susie! Students follow 1-3 step directions to stick the objects onto her!

Following directions cards: 1-3 steps included on one card. Simply give the students the number of steps they are working on:

There Was A Silly SLP...

I thought I'd try my hand at creating a mini-book just for SLPs!

This is the result:

There Was A Silly SLP Who Got Stuck To Some...Plurals

There is a 16 page mini-book that follow Susie, the silly SLP. Susie spills some glue on herself and then some strange things happens. She gets stuck to 6 regular plurals and 6 irregular plurals! I chose early developing irregular plurals (feet, teeth, mice, sheep, deer, fish). 

Pre/Post Test:

 Use the items on page 15 to sequence/re-tell the story:

Use this page and the following directions cards to "stick things on Susie." 

You have the option to read 1, 2, or 3 step directions to your students:

Talk about the different locations that Susie went and use the items on page 15 to place what she got stuck to in each:

App Companion Packet?

By now, you've probably heard of all the great book companion packets that SLPs have created to go along with popular books. Here's something that I think is a new concept: app companion packets!

I have received permission from the author of the My PlayHome app to create this packet specifically designed for SLPs. This is by far one of my favorite apps to use in therapy sessions! I wanted to create something that could be a go-to resource for a variety of skills that SLPs target on a regular basis. 

Bear with me for this long post as I want to give a good description of this packet!

This is a picture from the packet with everything that is included:

Each room is on a separate page and features the vocabulary items that are in each room. There is a receptive and expressive task that can be carried out for each room:

There are 1 step directions (again separated by room):

There are two versions of 2 step directions. One version DOES NOT involve switching rooms and one DOES in order to make it a little more difficult. The star shows the abbreviations I used for each room:

 3 step directions don't involve switching rooms:

There is a page for each room with concepts that can be targeted, such as on, off, in front, behind, etc:

Can I Take Your Order?

I have several young students working on following directions and receptive language. With this age group, we also do A LOT of pretend play. I decided to create a restaurant/food themed receptive language activity that I dubbed "Can I Take Your Order?"

First, print a "tray" for each student:

Then cut and laminate the food item cards and place all face-up in the center of the table or room. You can print a copy of the food items for each student if you're just beginning to work on these skills or use only one set to make it more challenging. There are a total of 16 different food items. 

 The SLP can act as the "customer" and tell the students which 3 items to grab and put on their tray. I also put the pictures on the cards, so that younger non-readers can take turns being the customer. This can serve to work on expressive language or articulation!

Spruce Up the Shirt Following Directions Game

Sometimes I go looking for specific clipart for an activity, but sometimes I see clipart that I really like and try to come up with a corresponding activity. In this case, it was the latter. I was perusing www.mycutegraphics.com (I love her graphics!) and came across these T-shirts. BINGO!

I love activities that gets kids up and moving, especially for following directions. 

I give you: Spruce Up the Shirt - 2 Step Directions!

There are 8 different colored shirts. Print out, cut and laminate for durability. Place one side of Velcro in four places on each shirt. Hang the shirts on the wall. 

These are the items your students will be placing on the shirts. Cut out, laminate and place all cards on a table so that all are visible:

Below is an example of the 2 step directions in which students have to place one item and follow an "action" direction (these cards have BLACK writing):

I also included 2 step directions that involve placing 2 items on different colored shirts (these cards have BLUE writing):

Middle of the week slump? How about a freebie?!

I updated my Start Your Engines Following Directions Game on TpT with an additional 24 cards for 2 step temporal directions involving before/after! I also added a unique feature. I don't know what everyone else goes through, but having to give 2 step directions involving before/after sometimes confuses me more than the students! So I created the document in such a way that each of the temporal direction slides has a slide right after with an SLP "cheat sheet!" If you laminate them back to back, one side will have the car and the direction you read to the student, while the other side has the order in which actions SHOULD be performed. Ex: Touch your nose after you sit on the floor (back of card reads: sit on floor, nose).
